Hibs head coach David Gray praised debutant Zach Mitchell after yesterday’s 1-1 with Dundee United at Tannadice.
The hosts took the lead through Luca Stephenson after just 20 minutes, capitalising from a set piece, but Gray’s men showed great character to get back in the game.
Martin Boyle scored his 8th goal of the season to draw Hibs level just before half-time, with the team then denied by the woodwork and a good save from Dave Richards denying Thibault Klidje one-on-one.
When speaking to Hibs TV after the game, Gray provided his thoughts on the performance.
“I have mixed emotions after that one. I was disappointed with the start to the game because we were a little bit slow to get going. We lost a really poor goal from a set piece again and shot ourselves in the foot.
“Credit to the players from there, they showed a reaction and got the equaliser. Up until half-time we were the dominant side, we hit the bar after the goal too.
“It wasn’t a complete performance again. The game was scrappy, and I can’t stand here and say we fully deserved to the win the game. I thought we carried more of a threat than we did the other night, but not as much as I’d like, but on the balance of play we did have the most clearcut chances. When those big chances come you need to take them, especially at a place like this.
“I just said to the players that we know it wasn’t a complete performance, and we have no right to go anywhere in the league and think we can just turn up and win.
“A point away from home is never a disaster as long as you back that up, and we have an opportunity to do that at the weekend.”
Zach Mitchell was a stand-out performer at Tannadice, setting up the equaliser and being solid defensively. The centre-half has had to wait patiently for his debut, and our Gray was pleased with that he saw from him.
“Full credit to Zach. He joined the Club on loan to get First Team experience. When you’re a young boy you want to play as many games as you can. He’s had to be patient, he’s trained well every day, and he’s shown he’d be ready to take his chance when it came.
“He fully deserves his performance today because of how professional he’s been and how he’s handled himself. I’m delighted for him.”
