Jacob Fearnley is back in the world’s top 100 tennis players for the first time since May after reaching the quarter final of the Quebec Challenger tournament with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Canadian, Alexis Galarneau.
The win has moved Jacob, from Edinburgh, up to world No 99 with high hopes he can progress further this week when he plays Japanese world No 186 Taro Daniel around midnight tonight.
A word of warning though: Daniel produced a notable win with a straight sets victory over Andy Murray at the 2022 Australian Open albeit the Scot, despite coming to the end of his career, was still able to avenge that defeat.
Jacob and Galarneau had met a few weeks ago in a tight three setter to determine the finalist in the Newport Rhode Island tournament.
By contrast with his previous victory back then Fearnley took much greater charge as he controlled matters behind a first serve operating at 83 per cent.
Indeed the tie was all over in 90 minutes providing a further confidence booster for US Open qualifying next week.
In qualifying for tonight’s showdown Taro Daniel defeated British No 3 Jan Choinksi in straight sets.
