Waverley Lawn Tennis, Squash and Sports Club will this weekend name their clubhouse lounge in memory of former Hon President, Jasper Carmichael who died last year, aged 95.

A ceremony at the Suffolk Road courts is expected to attract dozens of friends and well wishers to attend.

Club president David Ferguson paid tribute, saying: “Jasper was an exceptional tennis player whose many accomplishments included Waverley singles champion in 1962 and our first squash champion in 1971. He was club President in 1968 and 1976 and a very active Honorary President from the nineties until 2024, relentlessly cheerful, enthusiastic and encouraging to everyone, particularly juniors.

” But his greatest achievement was as one of the main driving forces behind the club in the sixties creating our two-storey clubhouse incorporating squash courts, changing rooms and upstairs lounge. But for this bold move we may not have survived, as sadly evidenced by the disappearance of our distinguished, high-achieving rival tennis club Liberton a year later. Without the foresight, bravery and determination of Jasper and the rest of his committee, none of us would be able to enjoy the great club we now have. This is why he is acknowledged as a Waverley giant.”

A wooden plaque designed by club member Richard Nettleton will be situated above the lounge door and a framed A4 explanation as to the re-naming will feature inside.
