A week later than in recent years, the Edinburgh Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe run from 7-31 August.

This year marks the 79th edition of both and as has become tradition over the last twenty-odd years, I’ve put together a list of recommendations across various strands of this year’s arts extravaganzas.

This month also marks my own 44th consecutive Fringe, an event that has changed so much in that time; when I started you were lucky if there were 300 shows, this year it is 3,649 productions across 258 venues, rather than the 30 or so there were back in the day. One thing that never changes, however, is the annual trawl through the programme in an attempt to find the hidden gems. Let me save you some time by highlighting the ones that have already caught my eye.

Before I go, I better give a shout out to one play in particular, Ships, by Mark Forrest. It’s a piece close to my heart as Mark is childhood friend and he has asked me to direct it for him – hence the mention, neither he nor my very talented four-strong cast would forgive me. Ships is a dark love story set in Leith in the late 80s/early 90s and is based on Mark’s experience of growing up in the then, and still, notorious Banana Flats. It’s running at Leith Arches from 11-15 August and it would be great to see you there. Say hello if you do get along.

Anyway, do have a great Fringe and remember to join me over at MustSeeTheatre.com for more highlights from the world’s greatest arts festival.

Happy Fringe going, Liam
