Dysfunctional families is a recurring theme in ancient Greek theatre, this opera using that as its basis.

Elektra is determined to avenge the murder of her father Agamemnon by her mother Klytämnestra. Involving her brother; she succeeds but is destroyed in the process.

Strauss again almost overwhelms us with his massive orchestral forces. Power, power, power! However, there are some calmer passages which provide some respite from the satisfying onslaught the considerable orchestra supplies. The conductor, Karina Canellakis, demonstrated her brilliance in commanding the equally impressive BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and an outstanding cast of singers.

Could not help but leave buzzing with excitement.
