Broughton Rugby Club men’s section, founded in 1924, have vowed to continue as a social/vets outfit when officially acknowledging that a lack of players has caused them to drop out of East Division Three this season.
The pledge comes on the Wardie-based outfit’s website in acknowledging their plight. The club’s often successful women’s team are unaffected.
A statement says: “Due to the severe level of player departure over the summer period it’s with great disappointment that the men’s team has unfortunately had to withdraw from East 2 this season.
“The club would like to thank all the efforts of those involved in trying to recruit new players and to thank those who made the decision to pull on the Broughton jersey this year both new and current.
“The club will continue to work hard this season to rebuild for next and if you are interested in learning about what the future holds then please come along to the AGM on Wednesday 26th August at Broughton Rugby Club where amongst other things the 5 year development plan will be discussed.
“This does not mean, however, that there will be no men’s rugby at Wardie this season as plans are already coming together for a Vets/Social team.

For most of this decade Broughton appeared in East Division One, taking the title in season 2024-25 before being disqualified a year later for failure to fulfil fixtures.
Today’s announcement confirms the fears of many at the end of last season.
