Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of an 11-year-old schoolgirl whose body was found in the water at a Midlothian beauty spot.
The alarm was raised shortly after 12.30pm on Thursday, August 6 following concerns for a child in the Gore Glen area near Gorebridge.
Emergency services including a Scottish Fire and Rescue water rescue team, rushed to the scene.
The body was found in the water near the Shank Bridge around 4.25pm.
Officers said that their enquiries to establish the circumstances of the tragedy remain ongoing.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of concern for an 11-year-old girl in the Gore Glen area, near Gorebridge around 12.40pm on Thursday, 6 August, 2026.
“The body of the girl was found in the Gore Water near to Shanks Bridge around 4.25pm.
“She was pronounced dead at the scene and her family are aware.
“Her death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
