Uncertainty over the future of Westfield Court continues to linger as Historic Environment Scotland (HES) are now deciding whether to proceed with a consultation on a proposed listing for the Gorgie block.
Westfield Court, a multi-storey block of flats which has stood in Gorgie for over 70 years, has faced uncertainty over its future for months amid severe problems.
While The City of Edinburgh Council is a minority owner, it remains as the factor of the building.
A council plan to buy up the flats ahead of demolition had to be paused after officers received notice in late May that HES were “likely” to approve an application to list the building.
At the time, a spokesperson for HES said that while they had not yet made their decision, their early view was that Westfield Court was of “sufficient interest for listing.”
In June, councillors agreed to object to the listing of the block, and lodge an appeal if it is listed.
Now, following conversations with the council, HES is now deciding whether to proceed with a consultation process over the application to list the building.
A spokesperson for Historic Environment Scotland said: “Following further correspondence with City of Edinburgh Council, we are now deciding whether to proceed with a consultation on a proposed listing.
“We expect to confirm our next steps in the next two weeks.”
On HES’ listing portal, the decision target date for the application is 3 June 2026, meaning it has been delayed by over a month.
Westfield Court encompasses 94 flats, with the council owning 32 of the flats, while 62 are in private hands as of June.
Should the application be confirmed as successful in the coming weeks, the Council would have to secure Listed Building Consent to undertake any work or proceed with any demolition plans.
