Thousands of people from Scotland and beyond are expected to travel to the Inner Hebrides, for the 15th sell-out edition of a Scottish music festival.

Tiree Music Festival (TMF) has just begun its 15th edition, and the population of the island is expected to treble over the weekend.

The festival officially began last night (JUL 9) with 1000 visitors taking part in a ceilidh before Ayrshire singer Nick Morgan took the stage.

Tiree locals Skipinnish, who made their TMF debut 15 years ago, headline on Friday (JUL 10), while Scottish artists Tide Lines, Skerryvore, Dougie MacLean and Sharon Shannon also feature in the lineup.

The festival takes place on the beachfront of the island, with visitors either taking a four hour ferry or 40 minute flight from mainland Scotland. The festival has contributed £11m to the local economy and has won 14 national awards.

Skipinnish’s Angus MacPhail, who played at the very first edition of TMF, looks back at the festival fondly. He said: “There’s nowhere quite like Tiree and no festival like TMF. I remember the first ever edition like it was yesterday and the excitement of playing a festival on my own home island.

“To be back playing TMF’s 15th festivval is something special. I’m very proud of Tiree’s music and of this flourishing local festival. The musical of this little island has won fans around the world and in that, TMF has played a huge role. This weekend we’ll see the very best of Tiree and we’re delighted to be a part of that.”

Alongside the musical acts, there will also be ceilidhs throughout the weekend and family friendly events such as beach games, silent discos and trips to the Tyree Distillery.

Artistic director of TMF Daniel Gillespie added: “From 2010 to now has been an incredible journey and we couldn’t be prouder to reach the 15-year mark. There is no feeling like seeing thousands of people come ashore who have travelled across Scotland, across Europe, and beyond, to join us on our little island for this event.

“We could never have dreamed that the festival would have such a positive impact on so many people, and we can’t wait to see everyone once again embracing the spirit of TMF this weekend. As far as we’re concerned, it’s No Tiree, No Party, and with the sun on the way we are set for one legendary ceilidh.”
