Linlithgow Rose defeated by St Johnstone at home

Linlithgow Rose fell to a 2-0 defeat against St Johnstone at a sun-drenched MV Commercial Prestonfield Stadium on Tuesday night, but the Lowland League side showed immense spirit to test their premiership opponents.

First-half goals from Kai Fotheringham and Ruari Paton did the damage for Simo Valakari’s side to ensure a winning start to their Premier Sports Cup group stage campaign.

Valakari made four changes to the side that defeated Cove Rangers 4-2 on Saturday. 

Toby Steward, Liam Smith, Jason Holt, and Logan Chalmers all came into the starting eleven, replacing Ross Sinclair, Daniel Finlayson, Taylor Steven, and Josh Fowler. Following their heroic 1-0 weekend upset against Greenock Morton at Cappielow, Rose manager, Gordon Herd, named an entirely unchanged lineup. 

The visitors looked sharp from the outset on a glorious evening. Ruari Paton got the game underway, and Saints almost unlocked the hosts after just four minutes when Jason Holt played in Paton, though the striker could not quite convert.

The breakthrough arrived just four minutes later. Paton’s initial strike was brilliantly saved by Rose goalkeeper Cammy Binnie, but Fotheringham reacted fastest to calmly slot home the rebound and make it 1-0. Despite the early setback, the Rose backline, marshaled by Jamie Watson, worked tirelessly to limit the top-flight side’s space.

Saints doubled their lead on the half-hour mark thanks to excellent work from Chalmers. The midfielder showed great determination to rob Ciaran Greene of possession inside the box before squaring to Paton, who tapped home from close range.

Gordon Herd’s part-time squad refused to fold and came out with renewed vigor after the interval. Just six minutes into the second half, the hosts carved out their best chance of the match. Half-time substitute Liam McQuaid threaded a clever pass down the left flank to Blair Henderson, who picked out Dylan Paterson just outside the area, but his left-footed effort was well handled by Toby Steward.

As the second half progressed, the Rose began to look increasingly threatening. In the 67th minute, Calum Rae—the weekend’s goal-scoring hero – unleashed a powerful right-footed drive from outside the box that forced another good save from Stewar

Defensively, the hosts dug deep to keep the scoreline respectable. Greene made a spectacular recovery tackle to deny Sam Stanton inside the box, and former Saints youth player, Cammy Thomson, produced a vital block to deny Smith late on. Binnie also pulled off another fine stop from Stanton before Smith’s rebound was ruled out for offside.

Saints threatened one final time when Stanton’s direct free-kick crashed back off the crossbar in the closing stages. Ultimately, the first-half double was enough to secure a professional three points for the visitors, but Linlithgow Rose left the tie with plenty of credit for a highly competitive second-half display.

Saints return to action this Saturday when they host Greenock Morton at 3pm, while the Rose will look to carry their positive momentum further into the group stage.
