Jacob Fearnley is into the quarter final of the Cranbrook Classic challenger tennis event in Michigan after extending his winning run to seven matches at the expense of Californian Tristan Boyer.
In winning the final of the recent Rhode Island event the Edinburgh player saved six match points and against a determined Boyer he needed five match points himself to get the 6-4. 6-4 win over the line.
But Jacob is nothing if not resilient these days and for the second match in-a-row he was able to give an opponent a three game start, breaking back from 1-4 adrift in the opening set.
From 66 per cent of first serves Jacob was able to win 82 per cent of points but the spectre of those double faults – seven this time – remains a worry as he aims to build momentum heading into the US Open qualifying tournament in late August.
Meanwhile, in the LTA Summer Cup, East men face Northamptonshire at Eastbourne tomorrow with the incentive to retain their place among the elite.
Facing Warwickshire today captain Euan McIntosh’s team fell away in the final round of matches to go down 3-6 to Warwickshire.
East ladies went down 3-6 to Leicestershire although “dead” rubber wins from Ama Nisbet partnering Maisie Wood and Mhairi Beattie alongside Aadya Iyer.
They still have an outside chance of preserving their place in Group Three but will need to defeat a strong Warwickshire.
