Edinburgh Zoo has announced the appropriately Scottish name of Bru for its new baby capybara following a public vote on social media.
The name was chosen from four distinctly Scottish options – Bru, Tunnock, Toddy and Tablet – provided by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), the wildlife conservation charity that runs Edinburgh Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park.
Bru was born in early May and soon racked up fans online, capturing the imagination of social media users around the world who lapped up the pup’s clumsy antics
Edinburgh Zoo is currently experiencing a “baby boom” with the birth of the first capybara in Scotland for 18 years, the first ever Sloth to be born in Scotland, a giant anteater pup, and both gentoo and Northern rockhopper chicks.

Capybaras are the largest living rodent in the world and are native to almost all countries in South America.
Adult capybaras can grow up to 3.48 to 4.40 ft in length and typically weigh 35 to 66kg.
Semiaquatic mammals, capybaras live in densely forested areas near bodies of water and despite their heavy, barrel-shaped bodies, are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for up to five minutes at a time.
