Trains running again after lorry hits bridge at Balgreen

A lorry hit the bridge over Balgreen Road on Wednesday afternoon which brought train services to a halt for a while.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said at the time of the incident: “We’re responding to reports of a lorry striking a bridge on the Edinburgh to Glasgow mainline near Haymarket station.

“Train services have been stopped to allow us to inspect the structure for damage, we’ll share another update soon.”

ScotRail staff confirmed around 5.25pm that engineers had examined the bridge and confirmed it was safe for trains to run again.

They added: “We are working to hard to get trains and crew back into position. Delays, alterations and cancellations may still occur, please check your journey before travelling.”

With Network Rail adding shortly after: “We’ve reopened the Edinburgh-Glasgow main line at Haymarket following a lorry striking a bridge.

“Now working together with operators to get trains moving, with trains and crews out of position it’ll take time, but we’re on the case.”
