A large field contested the gruelling Rig Race held during the Balerno Gala week which opened with the Parade on Saturday.
Athletes from around Central Scotland plus locals headed out of Malleny Park at 7.30pm and made the tough climb up Bavelaw Road and upwards towards the Rigg.
Luckily, it was a perfect night for the popular event, little wind and cool temperatures, and the six-mile route took entrants back to the village via the steep Cockburnhill Road.
Local people were out to cheer the runners on and the first athletes re-entered the park good time. Results are expected later.
The gala continues throughout the week with a series of events culminating in the Gala Day on Saturday (noon to 16.00).
On Tuesday, May 19, there is a dog show in Malleny Park (18.30), family rounders on Wednesday (18.30) in Bells Field between Cairns, Marchbank and Whitelea.
Thursday features cycle races in Malleny Park (18.30) and registration is required for the tennis event at Balerno Tennis Club on Friday, May 22 (13.00 to 17.00).
There is a Gala Day bake off and drop off is between 11.30 and noon with judging at approximately 14.00.
