As the first glimmers of sun hit the flagstones, dads everywhere are breaking out the barbecues, mums have their SPF at the ready and kids are ready to run amok in the summer heat, however briefly it may bless our skies.
The Easter holidays have come and gone, and the six week summer break will soon be upon harangued parents everywhere before you know it, with cries of “I’m bored” not far behind.
Perhaps you’re an Edinburgh local looking for ways to spend a cheap day out. Or maybe you’re planning to visit as a family from outside of the city, and want to know the must-see highlights while travelling with children, without missing out on grown-up attractions
Fear not! Keeping your kids entertained doesn’t need to be complicated. These are five activities for Edinburgh families to make the most of the great Scottish summer – take a look!
- Camera Obscura
Camera Obscura is a museum featuring over five floors of optical illusions.
With free admission for under 5s and reduced rate tickets for entry before 9:30am, it’s a surreal and charming way to capture the attention of young minds.
Afterwards, take a trip to Cold Town House, where your kids can enjoy two courses for £10.
- Discounted kids meals
Speaking of great places, there are plenty of food bargains to take advantage of around the city.
Amongst them, Bella Italia’s kids menu is free on Thursdays, or just £1 from Sunday to Wednesday.
Likewise, kids eat for just £1 on Sundays at the Vittoria, meaning a Sunday roast doesn’t have to set you back outrageously.
- Family game nights
If money is tight, staying home doesn’t have to be boring.
There are plenty of inexpensive ways to host your own family fun night.
Break out the board games, throw together some cheap snacks and simple recipes, or even create your own trivia tournament with an easy quiz generator like FlexiQuiz.
For refreshments, mix pineapple and orange juice along with fruits of your choice to create a family friendly punch, enjoy homemade popcorn (no need to argue over sweet or salty), or put together a selection of homemade finger foods.
- Harry Potter attractions
With the release of the new series, there are plenty of cheap and free activities to explore if your kids love the stories of The Boy Who Lived.
A guided walking tour will set you back about £20 per head, but you can easily put together your own. Visit locations such as The Elephant Room, where the majority of the books were written and where fans have left homages to the series in the form of graffiti with messages of love and adorations.
Alternatively, check out Greyfriars Kirkyard, whose gravestones gave many of the names of characters who are now some of the most famous in the world.
Or take a stroll up Victoria Street, which is believed to have been the inspiration for Diagon Alley.
- Climb Arthur’s Seat
If your kids need to burn off some excess energy, Arthur’s Seat is an idyllic hiking spot that is sure to wear them out.
It usually takes up to an hour to reach the top, and once you’re there the views are stunning. Cast your eye across the city’s main attractions, including Edinburgh Castle, the bridges to Fife and the East Lothian coastline.
