Portobello water polo star Joe Mathieson has had a Great Britain debut to remember at the world water polo championships in Malta.

Fresh from scoring his first goal for GB in a 10-13 defeat by Slovenia the 18-year-old Portobello High School student then notched a “hat-trick” in a concluding 18-8 win over South Africa to gain the “player of the match” award.

That meant Great Britain tied 21st in Division Two of the championships.

Joe was one of three Scots included in the GB team along with the Dunfermline pair, Rory and Finlay Nesbitt.
