Richard Hurst’s monstrous towering Trunchbull is a triumph.

The ‘revolting children’ of Crunchem Hall may well ensure that their nemesis, Miss Agatha Trunchbull, gets her comeuppance by the end of the Matilda The Musical, but there’s little doubt Richard Hurst’s monstrous headmistress is the towering triumph of this touring production of the RSC’s smash hit show.

Based on Roald Dahl’s much-loved 1988 novel, with book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, Matilda tells the story of an extraordinary little girl with a love for books who overcomes an unhappy home-life by escaping into a world of storytelling while using her intelligence to outwit her tyrannical headmistress, all with the help of kind-hearted librarian, Miss Phelps, and inspirational teacher, Miss Honey.
