Musselburgh Windsor Football Club have awarded stalwart, Johnny Brown, their highest accolade – the John Murray Shield.
The shield, which commemorates the club’s chairman from 1984-2001, was presented by John Murray’s niece, Nicky Scally and announced at the recent club AGM by president, Scott Robertson.
Johnny Brown began his involvement by running the 2002 age group shortly after joining the club in 2008.
It was the start of a journey through various roles and commitments including team leader, team secretary, coach, bookings secretary, general club secretary, committee member, organiser and fund raiser.
From 2008 right through to 2022, Johnny was an ever-present at club meetings. Currently he assists the 2002 and 2005 age group teams.
President Robertson said: “Johnny helped build the way this club works. He does not think he is Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho; it’s not about him or creating the next Barcelona team; it’s entirely about the kids.”
A highlight of Johnny’s coaching was the under-17’s Second Division title in 2021/22.
Also, he oversaw the 2005 age group from October 2011 to June 2025, Johnny was there from the very first
session to the last, a journey which ended perfectly with an unbeaten league season. Many of those players now represent Musselburgh Athletic.
President Robertson added: “What Johnny does better than anyone is organise. Fixtures are right. Registrations done. Parents know where to be and, crucially, players feel supported.
“Johnny understands that football for kids is (also) about enjoyment, belonging, and memories – race nights, fun runs, bag packing, bonus balls, Christmas nights out, trips to Newcastle, Alton Towers, and Blackpool.
“Johnny didn’t just run teams; he created experiences.”
Johnny Brown became an Honorary Member of the club at the 70 th anniversary dinner in 2024.
On his latest honour Johnny Brown said: “I dedicate this to all the players and coaches I have had the pleasure to be
involved with.”
At the AGM a 15 year service award was given to ex-player now coach Ryan McKechnie while Ian Gillon and Scott Hutchison were presented with 10-year service awards.
Allan Russell was re-elected chairman while Ian Gillon was installed as vice chairman with Jim Dickson opting not to stand for re-election.
