Aberdeen have sacked Swedish coach Jimmy Thelin only months after he led them to their first Scottish Cup triumph in 35 years. They beat Celtic at Hampden in May.
The club ploughed substantial money into recruitment drive at the start of the season to move Aberdeen forward but a bitterly disappointing campaign in the William Hill Premiership followed.
And the Dons failed to make an impact in Europe.
The final straw came after Saturday’s defeat at newly-promoted Falkirk.
Thelin has been in charge for 18 months and the men from the Granite City sit in eighth spot in the 12-strong league table with seven wins, four draws and nine defeats in 20 games. They have 25 points.
Aberdeen’s next two fixtures are against resurgent Rangers. The first game is on Tuesday at Ibrox (20.00) with the return at Pittodrie on Sunday (16.30).
A club statement said that results and performances have fallen below the required standard and have not been commensurate with the level of investment made in the first-team squad and football operation.
Thelin (pictured) said: “It is with great respect for this historic club that I accept this decision. Results ultimately decide the tenure of this profession and, as such, I take my share of responsibility.”
