Artist, Sheila Mullen, will celebrate her 84th birthday on 24 January – the eve of Burns Night – with an exhibition of her work in Edinburgh.
The retrospective will be an opportunity to see her many oil paintings which she has created in her studio in remote Annandale, where she has lived now for 50 years.
Her figurative paintings celebrate the supernatural Border Ballads which she truly loves and recently her painting is inspired by more modern poets such as Hugh MacDiarmid and William Soutar.
The exhibition opens just ahead of Burns Night on 25 January and includes several paintings which give a nod to the bard. Among them there is a spectral Tam O’Shanter, and True Thomas based on the eerie Border Ballads. The Fairy Queen and Thomas the Rhymer are depicted riding a white horse through a river of the blood of the man’s iniquities travelling to Fairyland. More recent works come from Mullen’s reading of her favourite modern Scottish poets such as Doug Curran, James Robertson and Betty Tindal.
