Hearts are reported to have had an offer for Laurent Mendy rebuffed by Forest Green Rovers, and Robbie Savage, their manager, believes he is a “brilliant” talent.
The 28-year-old defender skippered the club to a 1-1 draw with Altrincham in midweek and Savage, a TV pundit and a former Wales international, told a local paper, the Stroud Times that Mendy was a Forest Green player currently and added: “That’s how it stands.”
Savage, who also played for Manchester United, Crewe Alexandra, Leicester City, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County plus Brighton and Hove Albion, said the interest from the William Hill Premiership pace-setters was understandable, and he praised the player for his performance against Altrincham.
However, the issue is being dealt with by the sporting director and the owner of the National League club based in Stroud, Gloucestershire.
The 51-year-old said: “He’s under contract for the next two-and-a-half years. That’s the situation.”
There is interest, he added, as Mendy is “an unbelievable” player.” Savage added: “He’s stepped up two levels and performed, that’s what we want at this football club, to develop players and create interest.
“Right now, he’s our player. There’s no buyout clause.”
