The Morningside Gallery is holding its annual exhibition this month, with more than 500 small, original paintings from some of Scotland’s most notable contemporary artists.
The annual show, which opens at Morningside Gallery on 17 January, is now in its twelfth year.
Each of the paintings is unframed and no more than 25cm in size. At a variety of price points and with a wide range of subject matter from landscapes, seascapes and city scenes to still life and portraits, the gallery says there is something for everyone.
Unlike other exhibitions at the gallery, there are no pre-sales in the Small Paintings Show. Anyone who joins the gallery’s mailing list will receive access to the online Private View which goes live at 6pm on Friday 16 January. A short film will accompany the link, featuring lots of the pieces on display in the gallery, with everything available to purchase online immediately.
Gallery director, Eileadh Swan, said: “This is one of our favourite shows of the year, and something special to look forward to each January. There’s something about seeing the abundance of creativity in this exhibition that seems to generate joy at the start of a new year for artists, gallery and clients alike. These paintings are small, but still involve a huge amount of work for the artists – we’re so lucky to have great relationships and strong commitment from so many, as this is no small undertaking for them.
“Clients see it as an opportunity to build a collection – many buy something every year and build their own walls of small paintings. Some will be following a particular artist while others will be drawn to someone new – it’s a great way to take a little risk with the freedom to try something different. These are generally not feature paintings to hang above a mantelpiece and this exhibition encourages people to really buy what they love.
“We’re set for a very busy launch weekend, with many of the paintings sure to be sold via our website during the online Private View. Now an established event, it’s a much-anticipated date in the diary for many of our clients, some of whom now make it a social event, gathering with friends for a small paintings party as they browse the exhibition online and choose their favourites!
“Our doors will open from 10am on the Saturday morning for everyone who would rather browse in person, and we’re looking forward to welcoming back gallery regulars as well as some new faces.”
The exhibition is being held in person at the gallery in Church Hill and can also be viewed and purchased online. Access to the online Private View will be emailed to those who have subscribed to the gallery’s mailing list through the website morningsidegallery.co.uk
The exhibition will run in the gallery from Saturday 17 January until 1 February and is open to the public.
