A group of mixed walking rugby players from Murrayfield Wanderers dressed for the occasion when holding a Christmas gathering in Roseburn Park.

Formed five years ago, and featuring two octogenarians as well as eight players in their ‘70’s in a pool of 25, action lasts around an hour with water breaks available.

Around 14-16 players are regulars and club officials stress that a nearby hostelry is primed to host post match debriefing and tactical inquests.

Another aspect is the inclusion of participants overcome mental and physical fragilities.

A Wanderers official said: “Walking rugby is touch rugby, without any running. So the players must only walk, bearing in mind we use the Olympic definition (one foot in touch with the ground at all times).

“So, there is no physical tackling, just a two-handed touch. However, the sessions do turn out to be aerobic!”
