The editor of The Times and The Sunday Times in Scotland, David McCann, 43, who took up his post in July 2025, was arrested and charged over “indecent online communications”.
Police Scotland confirmed that Mr McCann was arrested on 25 November following a search at an Edinburgh address. He appeared on petition at Edinburgh Sheriff Court the next day where he made no plea. He was remanded in custody overnight and then appeared in court on 27 November when bail was granted for further examination.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Tuesday 25 November, 2025, officers executed a search warrant at a property in the Edinburgh area.
“A 43-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with indecent online communications.”
His employer has confirmed that he has been suspended from his role. A spokesperson for News UK said: “We have been informed that David McCann, Editor of The Times and The Sunday Times in Scotland, has been made the subject of a criminal investigation unrelated to his work. He has been suspended from the business. We will not be making any further comment at this time.”
Mr McCann previously worked at a number of Scottish newspapers including The Edinburgh Evening News and The Herald. He previously worked as deputy editor and news editor at The Times.
