Intending participants in a new Edinburgh Padel League have until 9 January to sign up for a competition running from 19 January until 22 March.
All standards are welcome provided the pair commit to the £50 entry fee which covers admin. and prize costs and leagues consist of divisions of eight couples with promotion and relegations.
The concept has been tried successful in other parts of the UK and business development manager Daria Falkous says it is a natural expansion to bring padel leagues to the East of Scotland where a representative team recently won the British men’s title making the area now recognised as a hotbed of the fast growing sport.
Says Daria: “The overall idea behind the league is that for the ordinary players who have played with their friends and have caught the (padel) bug they can have fun and compete in the league format. Top prizes include rackets, padel gear and gift vouchers for each division winner.”
Matches are played in best of three sets and arranged using Whatsapp groups for each division which entrants will be added to. Weekly fixtures will be posted on Whatsapp groups and a website. Courts will be booked and paid for by players through Playtomic* at their agreed local venue.
Daria acknowledges there may be difficulties initially in gauging relative standards but expects things to quickly settle down.
