Actor and comedian Ricky Gervais has donated almost £2.5 million to charities which care for animals – and our own Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home is among the recipients.
Ricky said on X: “To celebrate my Mortality Tour, my Netflix Special, my Golden Globes nomination & The Spirit of Christmas, I am donating £2.43 Million to Animals. These are the lovely charities I’ve chosen. Merry Xmas Critters.”
Among the other organisations which will receive a leg up this Christmas are Libearty Sanctuary, Pangea, Wild Futures, All Dogs Matter, Dogs On The Streets, Paws2Rescue, Saving Strays, Chaldon Animal Sanctuary, Turgwe Hippo Trust, Safe Haven For Donkeys, and Catastrophes Cat Rescue.
Other donations will support Finding Shelter Animal Rescue, Flori’s Friends Animal Rescue, NYC Second Chance Rescue, Helping Rhinos, and Retreat Animal Rescue.
The comedian also donated £1.9 million to charity from his previous Armageddon tour.
The Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home have said thank you to the actor on social media. In a post they said: “This is the best early Christmas present! We are completely floored and so thankful you picked our Home along with so many brilliant animal charities. With rescue centres and rehoming organisations under more pressure than ever, support like this couldn’t have come at a better time.
“It’s given our team and the animals in our care, a wonderful boost when we needed it most. As we launch our Winter Appeal, this donation will also help to keep vulnerable animals safe, warm and cared for.
“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting us and the animals who need it most. A big wet kiss to you from all our pets here!”
NEW CEO
EDCH appointed a new Chief Executive Officer on 1 December to lead the charity at a crucial time as they faced an unprecedented demand for services. The charity launched its winter appeal on the same day.
Amelia Morgan has been appointed the new Chief Executive Officer. She brings more than 20 years of leadership experience from the charity and public sectors, including senior roles at Venture Trust, Yorkshire Universities and Scottish Canals. Her background in organisational development, community support and strategic leadership will help guide the Home as it supports an increasing number of animals and owners who are seeking help.
Amelia Morgan said: “The Home has an amazing track record, and the work of the team is truly life-changing in supporting and caring for dogs and cats in need of loving homes. I believe strongly in compassion for animals and the joy of having dogs and cats as part of the family. I am delighted to be joining the Home at such a critical time, to build on these foundations so more dogs and cats are loved, safe and happy.”
