Defenceman Drydn Down earned revenge for Dundee Stars over their arch rivals Fife Flyer at Kirkclady when the Canadian, now in his seventh season with the Tayside team, stepped-up when needed.
He kept his cool to slot the game-winning penalty shot and earn Stars a 5-4 victory after Fife won 6-3 at the Dundee Ice Arena on Tuesday.
Stars led all the way but Flyers kept on responding and the welcome win and the two points does not lift them off the bottom of the ten-strong table.
They have 12 points from 21 starts but Fife remain ninth with 13 points from 26 fixtures as both sides bid to earn a place in the end-of-season play-offs.
Coventry Blaze currently occupy the eighth and final play-off position with 17 points from 24 games but the race is hotting up.
Earlier, Shane Owen started for Fife in the net while Jarrett Fiske was the pick for Stars and it was the Flyers netminder who was the first to be beaten, Otto Nieminen being set up by Benjamin Almquist and Quinn Ryan after 8min 24sec.
But Flyers hit back after 10min 12sec when former National Hockey League (NHL) forward, David Booth, who bagged a glory treble in the 6-3 victory at Dundee Ice Arena on Tuesday, scored on the power play after 10min 12sec.
Keaton Jameson and Anton Karlsson set up the chance which arrived on the power play with Stars player, Matthew Boudens, in the penalty box for high sticks.
Flyers’ fans joy in the 2,556 crowd was short-lived when Stars edged ahead for a second time, Matt Berry counting after 14min 07sec. Craig Moore and Drydn Dow were involved in the build-up.
Back came Fife and another newcomer, ex-NHL player, Milan Lucic, was on the mark after 19min 12sec to tie the score at 2-2 with Jameson recording his second assist of the night.
Dundee were not to be denied and only 38sec later the Tayside team celebrated netting for a third time. Dow, a provider for the previous score, turned marksman after 19min 50sec and he was set up by Jackson Desouza and Keanu Yamamoto.
This see-saw battle continued into the middle session but it took Fife more than ten minutes to level. Logan Neilson, another recent recruit, and a former Sheffield Steelers player, was on the mark this time after being set-up by Ian Scheid and the busy Karlsson. Time 30min 24sec.
Stars regrouped and they went ahead for a fourth time when Kameron Kielly netted after 37min 17sec with Moore and Yamamoto providing the ammunition.
The scoreline stayed that way until the second break and well into the third and final session. Fife counted after 51min 20sec for 4-4 with Johan Porsberger providing the final touch and Justin Ducharme, recently back in the squad after a long-term injury, and Scheid assisting.
The sides could not be separated a the final whistle and the match went into sudden death overtime. The deadlock continued so the tense tussle then went to penalty shots and captain Dow did the business for the visitors under real pressure despite Dundee being outshot 44-39 in the game.
