India-born Shreyas Tekale, who moved to the UK in 2017 and is a product of Boroughmuir HS is one of three players who will fly the flag for East cricket when Scotland contest the ICC men’s under-19 world cup in Zimbabwe and Namibia early next year.
Shreyas, a member of the Carlton team that won the ECB junior club competition with victory over Surrey club Banstead at Lord’s last year, joins Stewart’s Melville’s Olly Pillinger and Rory Grant of Grange who also plays for Leamington Spa.
Shlok Thaker of Clydesdale and Shreyas Tekale have been added to the group that won the qualifying tournament at Dundee last August.
Forfarshire’s Thomas Knight continues as captain.
Among four players named as reserves are Cam Hunter of RH Corstorphine and Ram Sharma of Stewart’s Melville.
The 15 man squad will fly to Potchefstroom, South Africa, on 30 December for a training camp before heading to Zimbabwe for warm up games against India and Bangladesh.
The Scots start against Zimbabwe on 15 January and go on to play Pakistan and England in further pool matches.
Coach Keegan Russell said: “Shreyas had a great tour in Ireland with the U17 squad at the Celtic Cup and proved a real handful on the wickets over there. He’s had a tough journey in terms of the teams he’s had to graft to get into and as someone who wasn’t in our wider squad at the start of the year, he’s come on a great deal and turned heads with some of his performances, so he deserves his selection.
“We see this tournament as a chance to go out and turn a few heads, and hopefully topple some bigger teams as well, but it’s also a chance to learn.”
