Derek McInnes summed up in simple terms his view after the no-score draw at Fir Park when he said: “There were some aspects I was pleased with, but we did not do enough to win the game.”
Hearts’ head coach felt his decision to go with two strikers would pay dividends, but added: “We had some good moments in the first half when we got into their back line, more on a counter attacking basis.
“We never made the most of that and I thought we were a wee bit passive in terms of our aggression and our starting points.”
The Jambos boss (pictured by Ian Jacobs) told Hearts TV: “I thought the second half was completely different. The first half hour I thought we had them exactly where we wanted them in terms of pressing them and turning the ball over, getting a wee bit of concerted pressure.
“Obviously, Lawrence (Shankland) has one cleared of the line and you think it is going to go into the back of the net, but, for the last 15 minutes, mabey the changes affected us, or whatever, we stopped doing what we needed to do, we stopped switching play we stopped being bright on the ball and took a wee step back.
“With 15 minutes to go we need to take a step forward and try and win the game, the changes may have affected the fluency and I thought Motherwell came back into the game and had one or two moments, Alex (the goalkeeper) makes a great save.
“I thought, over the piece, obviously a lot has been made of Motherwell being an talented team and all the rest of it, but other than that last chance at the end I thought we kept them to very little.
“We took a point but we came for three. We have to be honest and say that our attacking threat in the last couple of games has not been quite on point. We take a clean sheet and we take the positives from that.”
