Train services on the Borders railway line have been disrupted after a lorry crashed into a railway bridge.

The crash took place just before 1pm on Wednesday, November 12, next to Newcraighall station.

The track between Brunstane and Newcraighall, on the Borders line, was closed, with railway engineers dispatched to the scene to inspect the damage.

Scotrail released a statement on its website: “We’ve had reports of a lorry striking a bridge between Brunstane and Newcraighall.

“The bridge is a structure that requires to be examined by our staff before services can pass over the bridge again.

“Staff are now onsite inspecting the bridge.”

A subsequent statement reads “Following a lorry colliding with a bridge earlier today between Brunstane and Newcraighall the line has now reopened.

“Disruption is expected to last until around 15:00 today (12 November).

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.50pm on Wednesday, 12 November, 2025, we received a report of a skip lorry striking a bridge on Newcraighall Road, Edinburgh.

“A man was charged in connection with road traffic offences and a report will submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
