A former Rotary International Scholar from Iowa has painted a watercolour of Edinburgh which she has donated to the club for fundraising at their upcoming International Night.
Hallie Johnson was a student in Edinburgh studying for a master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh when she was “adopted by the club”.
Hallie Johnson said: “I’m so glad to be able to support Portobello Rotary in this fundraiser, and I am really looking forward to attending my second Rotary International Night as I have extended my stay in amazing Edinburgh.”
There are nine current Rotary Global Scholars hosted by clubs in Edinburgh, Dunbar, Eyemouth and Renfrew who will all attend the evening celebration on Friday.
The event is sponsored by Farmer Autocare who have one of their 21 centres behind Ravelston House Hotel in Musselburgh where it takes place.

They also gifted a valuable ‘sponsors prize’ for the fundraising night that I’m sure many attending would like to have.
“At this Rotary International Night, a String Quartet and a vocalist from Portobello High School will delight guests and warm their hearts with their musical talents.”
Portobello High School is the Portobello Rotary Club’s first Community Member, with pupils and staff joining the fun on Friday evening.
“Our relationship with our local high school is blossoming. Our objective is to support personal development, personal growth, as well as employment opportunities and positive life experiences through a range of Rotary projects. These opportunities include regional creative arts projects, enterprise and leadership workshops, and so much more. The high school leadership team are inspirational and a delight to work with for the benefit of the community we collectively serve.”
The fundraising evening has attracted an attractive range of prizes, including the highlighted ‘Sponsors Prize’ of a full car service valued at a minimum of £229. Our prize draw highlights also include Afternoon Tea for two at The Witchery by the Castle, a Scotch Whisky Experience ‘Gold Tour’, two Usher Hall tickets for ‘Home Alone’ the movie, with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in concert and two tickets for Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra, as well as a Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo prize bundle.
Lawrence Marshall, Portobello Rotary Club Treasurer, said: “We are over the moon with the number of fabulous fundraising prizes. The quality of the donated prizes is attractive enough to have people buy raffle tickets who can’t even be at the dinner.”
All proceeds from the art sale and the other fundraising on the night will go to Voice of Carers Across Lothian (VOCAL), who help with respite breaks and counselling support for unpaid carers.
There are a small number of tickets still available for the evening at £39.50, and there is still time to bid for the donated framed watercolour (32cmx32cm).
