Hearts face Dundee on Saturday in the William Hill Premiership (15.00) and Derek McInnes, the club’s head coach, said that the point earned at St Mirren in midweek will be “decent” if the Jambos can take three points from the Tayside team.

McInnes told Hearts TV after the Paisley games: “There are a lot of disappointed boys in the dressing room but, over the course of the season, a draw here (in Paisley) is not the worst result. It is a difficult place to come. All in all there were lots of positives to take.”

Looking back at the game which ended in a 2-2 draw, the ex-Aberdeen and Kilmarnock boss said: “Scrappy at times, end-to-end at times and we carried a good threat. Obviously, we are disappointed with the first goal we lose, the first goal is so important, particularly away from home.

“We don’t deal with the free-kick, we’re too deep, and it is a brilliant bit of skill from the boy, you have to applaud that, but he should be ten yards further out.”

He thought the front two for St Mirren caused Hearts problems and he added: “We did not deal with the physicality, but the response was good, as it normally is.

“Beni (Baningime) should score, the ball hits the inside of the post, and there are one or two other moments, but Lawrence (Shankland) gets the equaliser and we spoke at half-time on certain things, and we looked to be carrying a threat.

“In between it all, we lost another goal and I thought we were a bit rushed, we needed to stay calm. St Mirren have real physicality. We are big ourselves, but we are not as big as St Mirren in terms of height.

“We lose a poor goal and we have to do it again. We did it, we came forward, and asked questions and we get a deserved equaliser through Claudio (Braga) and we kept asking questions. I thought we had more shots, we hit the woodwork and we had chances.

“The substitutes, (Tomas) Magnusson and (Pierre) Kabore, were influential and the good thing for us is that nobody gave it up, everybody kept going to try to get a win. We had that belief that there was another chance coming.”
