Lothian Road in Edinburgh is closed at the junction with West Approach Road and Shandwick Place is closed westbound at the junction with Princes Street due to two separate crashes.
Around 5pm on Friday, 12 September, 2025, police received a report of a one-vehicle crash at the junction with West Approach Road on Lothian Road.
The vehicle involved is believed to be an ambulance.
A short time later, a two-vehicle crash was reported on Shandwick Place at the junction with Princes Street.
One of these vehicles was a police car which was badly damaged.

Emergency services are in attendance and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

Shortly after 7pm, Edinburgh Travel News reported: “Recovery is underway at the West End now.
“Police are holding all citybound traffic on Shandwick Place and Queensferry Street in addition to the existing closures on Princes Street and Lothian Road.”
Buses and trams have been affected by the crashes.
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “An incident involving one of our ambulances occurred on Lothian Road, Edinburgh at 17.00 whilst it was on its way to an emergency call.
“One member of staff was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as a precaution. There was no patient on board, and an additional vehicle was dispatched to the call.”
Edinburgh Trams posted on social media “Due to an ongoing incident on Princes Street, we are part route between Airport to West End, and Picardy Place to Newhaven.
“We apologise for any disruption to your journey.”

Police Scotland update: “Lothian Road and Shandwick Place in Edinburgh have re-opened following two separate crashes.
“Around 5pm on Friday, 12 September, 2025, we received a report of a crash involving an ambulance on Lothian Road at the junction with West Approach Road.
“One person was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.
“A short time later, on Shandwick Place there was a crash involving a marked police car and a car at the junction with Princes Street.
“There were no reports of any injuries.
“Enquiries are ongoing.”
