Heather Lyon a ballet dancer who attends the Northern Ballet School will take part in the prestigious Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition in São Paulo in Brazil in October.
This is an annual competition attracting young dancers from all over the world to dance, and compete for prizes and scholarships at some of the best ballet schools including The Royal Ballet School.
Heather is now 18 but began dancing at the age of three at her local dance school in Edinburgh, KS Dance Academy.
She said: “I am so excited to take part in this competition and represent my home country of Scotland.”
The announcement came from the Royal Academy of Dance which is one of the world’s most influential dance education and training organisations. With a strong global membership presence in over 85 countries, each year around 250,000 dancers learn the RAD syllabus and take exams.
The Fonteyn competition is one of the oldest and is named after the longest-serving RAD president, Dame Margot Fonteyn. It helps to promote dance and recognise excellence in young ballet dancers all over the world.
The top prize is the coveted Genee Gold medal supported by Freed of London. There are also silver and gold medals and cash prizes.
