The Edinburgh Combat Project, founded by Pawel Zakrzewski assisted by his brother, Daniel, has received a major boost following a successful fund raising dinner.
The charity aims to assist youngsters and adults with physical and mental health difficulties through martial arts and a leading auction item at the dinner saw a pair of boxing gloves signed by two time unified heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua sell for £500.
The gloves were donated by a patron who wished to remain anonymous.
The evening, hosted by the Balmoral Hotel, has been described as a powerful showcase of ECP’s transformative work, highlighting its mission to empower individuals and foster resilience through free martial arts training and mentorship.
Since launching in 2023, ECP has supported over 50 young people and adults, providing more than 168 hours of free training per month and donating equipment worth over £14,000.
Under the guidance of Pawel Zakrzewski whose motivation is rooted in childhood tragedy and reaction to his father’s untimely death back in his native Poland, ECP is dedicated to breaking down barriers to participation, building confidence, life skills, and enhancing mental well-being.
“The Balmoral event was more than just a fundraiser – it was a celebration of our community’s strength and the transformative power of martial arts,” said Zakrzewski who was aged five at the time of his father’s death .
What pacified the angry child was discovering martial arts.
“Our vision is to create a world-class community centre in Edinburgh that brings together sport, mental health, and mentorship under one roof,” said Pawel.
Professional boxer and multi-sport world champion Nicola Barke, who served as the evening’s keynote speaker, praised ECP’s efforts: “The Edinburgh Combat Project work tirelessly to make a difference and lasting impact on the lives of all the youth they work with. How special to be a part of.”
With its sights set on scaling its impact, ECP plans to expand its programmes, introduce after-school tutoring, and establish a dedicated mental health support framework in its planned new facility. The charity is also seeking new strategic partners, board members, and sponsors to help make this vision a reality.
