Fringe programme published today
Ahead of a launch party this evening the programme for the 29,521 performances which will make up the 2025 Edinburgh Festival Fringe is published today by the Fringe Society. More than a quarter of the programme is theatre with 36.2% of shows classified as comedy.
There are more than 3,000 shows of all kinds to be performed in August in 265 venues by performers from 58 countries. Some of the venues are new – such as Easter Road which will host two shows, and the Miracle Spiegeltent at Gyle Shopping Centre hosting the Spirit of the Favela all the way from Rio.
Gilded Balloon which is without its usual home of the Students Union on Teviot Row is opening a new space in Appleton Tower where 20 shows will take place – and in a return to the old days the Famous Spiegeltent is back in St Andrew Square with La Clique – a mix of cabaret and circus.
There will be 325 free show and 529 pay what you can shows in the programme with the PBH’s Free Fringe offering many of those with other shows at Laughing Horse and at Leith Depot. The Three Sisters pub in Colgate will become the location for Disco Picnic.

Edinburgh Festival of Cycling
The Festival begins tomorrow – but has moved most of the activity out of the city to East Lothian where they are being supported by the local council.
There is scant information – but several events listed here which begin from tomorrow.

Typewronger TypeWRITERS
Typewronger the bookshop on Haddington Place on Leith Walk is starting up its new writing group with a Media-swap workshop. All writers will be issued with a new challenge by Tee Hodges to “push the boundaries” with their writing. The first meeting is on 27 June 2025.
“This month Tee is inviting you to think about the media you use to write your work – computers, pen and paper, your phone… a typewriter? The equipment we use has a profound effect, and if you’re not sure if that’s true why not put it to the test? We’ll have 9 different writing setups from the conventional to the bizarre available on the night, and the Typewronger Gong will sound every 10 minutes when you will have to change places and continue on a different setup.
“As we’re changing things up so quickly over the course of the workshop you musn’t attempt to write anything too complicated – Tee recommends a simple scene set in a very specific time and place – lots of descriptive writing. Make it somewhere you know well so you’re never going to be struggling for ideas, and don’t worry too much about the plot.
“If you register for this event it is important that you attend, and if something prevents you from coming you must let us know immediately so we can let folk on the waiting list know.
“Tee Hodges (penname TSJH) has absolutely no qualifications in Creative Writing whatsoever. They also have no qualifications in risograph printing, publishing & bookselling – but that’s never stopped them. Their CV is impressively filled with no qualifications in a wide range of fields, with the exception of an MA in Classical Studies and an MLitt in Classics. All they can remember from these is the sound the Frogs make in Aristophenes’ eponymous play.”
