Andy Warhol: The Textiles takes you on a journey through the unknown and unrecorded world of designs by the well-known artist.

Showcasing more than 60 of Warhol’s textile patterns from the period, these depict an array of colourful objects including jumping clowns and ice cream cones.

Warhol focused on patterns and prints for every day fashion, responding to the demands of his professional clients. He had a knack for turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, and a fascination for repetition which was a key part of his pop art. His textiles were sold anonymously by an agent in New York’s garment district and kept hidden until last year.

The works were made anonymously by Warhol and this is the first time they have been exhibited in Scotland, having recently been found by curators Richard Chamberlain and Geoff Rayner.

Dovecot Director Celia Joicey said, Dovecot is thrilled to be collaborating with the Fashion and Textile Museum to bring the first exhibition about Andy Warhol’s textile designs to Scotland.

Warhol recognised textile as an artistic medium and, as a globally recognised name, offers Dovecot the opportunity to promote tapestry in the context of this joyful and vivacious work.

Exhibition curators Richard Chamberlain and Geoff Rayner comment, This exhibition builds on over a decade of research, several chance encounters and strokes of luck to bring together this previously unknown but important aspect of Warhol’s oeuvre.

Alongside the exhibition, Dovecot will host a range of events inspired by Warhol’s illustrations and designs, from science food events and fashion shows to textile printing workshops.

The next event is on 22 March – Join Dovecot’s Curator for an exclusive tour of Andy Warhol: The Textiles.

This exhibition will take you on a journey through the unknown and unrecorded world of designs by the influential artist before his Silver Factory days. Showcasing over 35 of Warhol’s textile patterns from the period, depicting an array of colourful objects; ice cream sundaes, delicious toffee apples, colourful buttons, cut lemons, pretzels, and jumping clowns, this exhibition demonstrates how textile and fashion design was a crucial stage in Warhol becoming one of the most iconic artists of the twentieth century.
