Heart of Newhaven Community and Networking Key Services are two Edinburgh based projects which have received financial support from charity Age Scotland.

The grant of £20,000 for Heart of Newhaven will allow them to develop their Dementia Meeting Centre and promote the integrated support which they offer. A grant of £19,200 for Networking Key Services will ensure a more holistic approach to services for South Asian communities, empowering them with clear, culturally appropriate information about dementia.

These are two of a dozen projects assisted by the charity’s fund which seeks to address gaps in support for people living with dementia.

Judy Crabb, Chair of Heart of Newhaven Community, said: “We are thrilled to receive this award. It will enable us, as a new Centre, to build on the foundations we laid last year and over the next 12 months further develop to meet the needs and wishes of all those who have already used us as well as reach out to new potential members.”

Naina Minhas, Director at Networking Key Services, said: “We are delighted to receive a grant award from Age Scotland to develop this initiative. The dementia awareness project will be a crucial first step in fostering understanding of dementia in South Asian communities.

“By initiating a dialogue, we seek to engage the communities in identifying a suitable cultural-sensitive approach to care, with a focus on supporting overall wellbeing of people living with dementia.”

Age Scotland’s Head of Dementia, Dr Kainde Manji, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support these vital projects through this round of grant funding.

“The work of local community-led organisations like Heart of Newhaven and Networking Key Services is absolutely life-changing for people living with dementia, their families and carers – playing a vital role in ensuring they feel supported in their communities and know how to access this support.

“We look forward to seeing the funding in action and are confident it will have a positive impact for people affected by dementia in the Edinburgh area.”
