The Cycling Gardeners of Edinburgh has been chosen as a finalist for Britain’s best New Kid on The Block Small business.

The business award has been going for seven years and searches firms all over the UK of all shapes and sizes.

The Cycling Gardeners is a new small business with an innovative concept that is reinventing the way gardener companies operate and is on the verge of becoming a new major player in Edinburgh gardening industry. The company partners with freelance gardeners providing bikes, tools and logistical support allowing the gardeners to do what they do best, get busy and down to work in the gardens.  It has been chosen as one of just eight finalists for New Kid on the Block Award Best Business Start-Up. This recognises businesses that have started in the last eighteen months and have demonstrated considerable progress in growth and development.

Callum Ross, Company director: “Going down to London for an award ceremony with the chance of winning somethings is strange but exciting, we’re not exactly black tie event people, none of us own suits or fancy dresses, I’ll probably wear my kilt and borrow and a nice jacket.

“It’s an exciting time for us, we looked at what was going on around us and how industries are changing, and how we could face the logistical challenges of working as gardeners in the city and the solution was obvious! Ditch the van and get on a bike. We have not looked back since.

“We love city centre gardens including tenement back greens. Traffic and parking don’t get in our way and our new electric kit means it’s light and easy to carry through houses and stairwells. All of the  gardeners we work with are experienced horticulturists. There is a great mix of backgrounds and skills and experience for any garden situation and we work as a team sharing knowledge between us”

Jake Randall, Cycling Gardener said: “Every day is different, it’s fresh air, great exercise and enjoyable gardening work. I’m glad to not to have to deal with the admin and logistical business sides of things, Callum and his team do a great job of that.”

Judged by a panel of industry experts, the winners of all categories, along with the overall winner of Small Business of the Year, will be announced at a glittering awards night in London on 18 May 2023.

“The Small Awards is all about celebrating the incredible small business owners who are at the heart of the economy and communities,” said Michelle Ovens, CBE, Founder of Small Business Britain. “They are an opportunity to recognise and applaud the passion and tenacity of the nation’s small firms, particularly during such turbulent times.  The Cycling Gardeners should be incredibly proud of being shortlisted for this award and we can’t wait to celebrate with them in May.”
