Edinburgh Royal Infirmary nurse ‘superhero’ wins national competition after crowdfunding over £29,000 for patient care packages

Local nurse, Alison Williams, has won a hotel stay anywhere in the world in recognition of her outstanding efforts against Covid-19.

North Berwick based local travel agent, Rock My World Travel, nominated Alison in a competition featured in the travel industry trade magazine, Travel Weekly, in recognition of the hard work of local ‘heroes’ who have emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Alison saw first-hand that many patients had very little personal items and as family could not visit, were unable to receive basics such as pyjamas and toiletries. Alison quickly launched a campaign on her local Facebook group with the original aim of raising £500 to create ‘Rainbow Boxes’, containing all the essentials patients required.

Today, the total stands at over £29,304.

Isobel McCardie of Rock My World Travel nominated Alison, a research nurse from the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Isobel commented “When I saw what Alison was doing, it instantly resonated with me. Not only was she on the front line fighting Covid-19, but her compassion for the patients inspired her to go further, funding and creating these amazing “Rainbow Boxes”. As soon as I saw the competition to nominate local super heroes, I instantly thought of Alison. She has been completely selfless in this entire task and is working tirelessly, I can’t think of anyone who deserves a wee break more.”

Alison plans to take her work colleague Rachel with her on the trip. Rachel has also been working tirelessly to help Alison deliver and maintain the Rainbow boxes at each ward.

The competition was run by travel company, Stuba, who invited travel agents to enter their real-life heroes with a chance of winning a £300 hotel voucher. Alison was selected as one of 20 national winners.
