A police investigation is underway after a body was found near to the Forth Rail Bridge around 7.22am this morning.

Officers from the British Transport Police attended the scene and the rail lines in both directions were blocked.

Dozens of trains have been cancelled and commuters have warned to expect significant delays across the east coast of Scotland.

A police spokesman earlier said: “British Transport Police were called at 7.22am on 13/07 to Forth Rail Bridge following a report of a casualty near the tracks.

“Officers attended, but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers remain at the scene and enquiries are currently underway to establish the full circumstances behind the person’s death and how they came to be near the railway.”

ScotRail confirmed the line had reopened shortly before 12pm but warned travellers to continue expecting delays.
