On Wednesday 5 February 2020 between 6.00 and 8.00pm they will be installing the latest piece of art at Bookmarket on the top level of the Waverley Mall.

This is the Fruitmarket Gallery’s meanwhile space while the gallery on Market Street is being renovated and extended.

Artist Pip Thornton’s Arcadia (2020), has been made specially for The Fruitmarket Gallery’s pop-up space and uses LED screens. You can see a preview here.

These will be hung in the bookshop’s windows to display text that will be seen in the communal mall space below.

The text is from Walter Benjamin’s Arcades project. Each word appears along with a price which is allocated from Google’s advertising platform.

Arcadia invites us to consider the processes that generate monetary value around us, in both physical and virtual marketplaces.

This will continue daily until 29 March 2020. There is also an event called What Price Poetry which takes place on 18 February 2020 with Pip Thornton and Nick-e-Melville. Tickets are FREE and available on Eventbrite.
