East Lothian Council will next week reveal draft designs for a four mile bike-friendly and walking path linking Gullane and Drem.

Council-appointed consultants, funded by cycling and walking infrastructure charity Sustrans Scotland, will update campaigners and stakeholders on 2 August about the feasibility report & masterplan.

Local activists have campaigned for 14 years to establish a safe path that separates cyclists and walkers from a dangerous main road.

Housing giant CALA Homes has already guaranteed to fund one section of the path near Gullane, while at Drem, a landowner has offered land for the safe link.

Drem/Gullane Path Campaign spokesperson Iain V Monk said:“We are excited at the prospect of finally viewing the draft designs. We understand landowners have engaged positively in the process, and for that, we thank them very much.

“Over the years we have worked hard to build, what has become, overwhelming support from local residents. We have also received backing from councillors, MSPs and many local businesses who recognise the positive health, economic and environemntal benefits of the proposed path.”

“All eyes now fall on East Lothian Council, which has consistently trumpeted its commitment to invest in cycling and walking infrastructure. Councillors must transform their words of support into a cast iron commitment to fund the path and set a timetable for construction.”
