Whether you agree that the number of people marching down the Royal Mile yesterday was 20,000 as suggested by Police Scotland or 100,000 as reported by others who back independence, there were certainly a lot of people! The sun shining and a blue sky of course helped, but it is difficult to estimate how many pro-independence supporters were there.

Organised by political group All Under One Banner, the march itself was friendly and full of folk having a bit of fun at the same time as making their political point. I witnessed the very end of the march passing over the crossroads at the top of the Mound just before 3.00pm. The march had stepped off from Johnston Terrace at 1 o’clock.

Motorists had been held up there for almost three hours and police had to deal with that (although the march was paused at intervals to allow vehicles to pass).  One of the marshalls then called for a round of applause for Police Scotland and their help in ensuring the safety of those marching and the public and many tourists watching on.
