Five Nations: Scotland 1, Ireland 5 (in Malaga)

Kenny Bain scored Scotland’s consolation when they lost 5-1 to Ireland in their third match of the Five Nations event in Malaga.

This is the second straight defeat for Derek Forsyth’s team who also lost 2-1 to Canada earlier in the tournament which is part of the preparation for the Commonwealth Games.

Earlier, Ireland’s first chance of the match produced a goal. From a penalty corner Shane O’Donoghue sent a drag-flick into the top right corner.

In the second quarter Ireland went 2-0 up through a goal identical to the opener from O’Donoghue.

Then Julian Dale capitalised on a defensive error to fire Ireland 3-0 ahead from close range.

And Conor Harte converted into the bottom left corner for 4-0 before former Kelburne star William Marshall, who now plays for English side, Surbiton, had a penalty corner saved.

In the final quarter Ireland scored a fifth goal when Dale knocked home the rebound after former Edinburgh University goalkeeper David Forrester saved.

Forrester then saved a penalty corner as the Irish went hunting for a sixth.

Scotland battled to the end and Kenny Bain pulled one back in the final quarter when he slammed a penalty corner into the bottom left corner.
