Mark Oxley

Mark Oxley has left Hibs and joined Southend United.

The 25-year-old  joined Hibs on loan from Hull City in 2014 and made an instant impact by scoring the winning goal on his league debut in a 2-1 victory over Livingston.

The goalkeeper made 90 appearances for Hibs, keeping 35 clean sheets, including in victories over Rangers at Easter Road and Ibrox, Aberdeen and Heart of Midlothian – most notably in the William Hill Scottish Cup Fifth Round replay victory at Easter Road.

In the quarter-final replay, he was booked for time wasting after losing  a contact lense in the latter stages of Hibs’ victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle. The booking meant that he was suspended for the semi-final and Head Coach Alan Stubbs brought in Conrad Logan who performed heroics and kept his place in the team for the final.

A Hibs’ spokesman said: “Mark leaves the Club as a Scottish Cup winner and goes with the best wishes of everyone at the Club for his future career.”

Southend manager Phil Brown signed him in 2008 following Hull City’s promotion to the Premier League.

Brown said “I paid a fee for Mark when he was a kid at Rotherham and I could see the potential in him from a young age.

“I’ve always kept an interest in him and after having an operation about four years ago he has played over 120 competitive matches at a very good standard of football.

“Bringing in Mark also gives Ted Smith competition for the number one jersey and it’s a nice challenge for us and them to have.”

Oxley said , “As soon as it came to my attention that Southend United were interested it certainly alerted me, when Phil first signed me at Hull City it was more for my development as I was at a young age so to work with him again is great.

I’ve played a lot of games since then and I’ve came to Southend United to show my experience, I can’t wait to get started and do well in a Blues shirt.”
