The Council are set to make it easier for local groups to shut off residential streets as play areas for the day. They have reduced the cost to £410 for each event and they will supply the signage required. The Locality Team in each area will have the final salon the pilot scheme which will start at the beginning of the Summer holidays and run for four months.

Any group which is organising the event will be able to run the first Play Out day free of charge.

The Transport and Environment Committee will approve this plan when it meets later this morning.

The regeneration of Craigmillar Town Centre in East Edinburgh has started with works commencing on a Lidl supermarketat Niddrie Mains Road.

The store was granted planning permission in September 2015 and works will be carried out by construction firm Clark Contracts to build the sustainable 1407m² store on the 1.5acre site, which will create up to 25 new jobs when opened.

The new store, which involves a total investment of £6.5m by the national supermarket chain, will have state-of-the-art facilities including a bakery, 12 tills and 93 parking spaces.

The supermarket first revealed last May that it wanted to re-locate the Craigmillar store as part of its ongoing ambitions within the UK. It is hoped that construction will be completed within 10 months, with the doors opening to customers in March 2017.

Lidl UK’s Head of Property for Scotland, Gordon Rafferty, commented: “There’s been much anticipation for this new Lidl store and it’s great that we are now in a position to break the ground and start the build. We are extremely grateful for all the support that we have received so far, and would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst we enter this next phase of the development.”

Due to be completed over the next six years, the redevelopment of Craigmillar Town Centre being carried out by The EDI Group Ltd will see the area transformed by a new retail centre, as well as a public square and community play parkcomplemented by a new secondary school and further housing.

Economy Convener Councillor Gavin Barrie said: “We’re extremely pleased to see works start as part of the regeneration of Craigmillar Town Centre. The commencement of works signals our ambitions to make significant improvements to the town centre and create an environment where communities can thrive for generations to come.

“The new retail centre will create a focal point for the community with high quality store options including Lidl and Home Bargains which is due to commence construction in the next four months.”

Lidl, which was crowned Grocer of the Year at the 2015 Grocer Gold Awards, has experienced continued growth over the years, as consumers flock to the shop to discover products ranging from quality British fruit and vegetables to premiums wines from its much coveted Wine Cellar collections. Lidl’s success shows no signs of slowing, as the latest Kantar Worldpanel results outline its continued growth and market share high of 4.4%

The store in Craigmillar is part of Lidl’s existing store portfolio of 630, and will form part of the company’s growth plans which hope to see this increase to 1,200 store in the future.

Jeremy Thomas – whose CV includes The Last Emperor, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, Crash, Sexy Beast and Young Adam – will be the subject of Edinburgh Napier University’s second Chancellor Talk.

Thomas will discuss his inspirations and ambitions with the University’s Chancellor, Dr David Eustace, in a free to attend event at the stunning Lindsay Stewart Theatre at the Craiglockhart Campus on Monday 20 June.

His extensive output includes The Great Rock’n’Roll Swindle starring the Sex Pistols through to Jonathan Glazer’s Sexy Beast, and most recently the JG Ballard adaptation High-Rise by Ben Wheatley and Tale of Tales by Matteo Garrone. He is without question the leading man in the independent movie scene.

I look forward to continuing our conversation, including students and those who love cinema.”

Thomas’s appearance at Edinburgh Napier on June 20, which will feature clips of his work, follows the successful launch of the Chancellor Talk events with a lecture by legendary graphic designer and publisher Milton Glaser in March.

A Scottish firm specialising in tailored interior design solutions has been chosen as a preferred contractor to furnish properties in the ongoing Quartermile luxury apartment project in Edinburgh.

Cate Warren Interiors developed a range of three beautifully designed furniture ‘pack’ options for City Meadows at the Quartermile development which allowed 40 residents to move instantly into fully-furnished, highly-styled homes.

The interior design company has now been appointed to provide further expert advice to the owners of the luxury apartments who are set to move into or rent out their property within the upcoming projects.

Cate Warren, Director, at Cate Warren Interiors works closely with Quartermile, letting agents and landlords seeking to enhance their properties through desirable, considered design, across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Cate said: “Six years ago, I formed Cate Warren Interiors to work primarily on show homes, but very quickly found that there was a gap in the expanding rental market for affordable, intelligent, design-led furnishing solutions – so we were absolutely delighted to be able to get involved in this major project.

“This is a very exciting time for the business with Quartermile becoming our biggest project to date. We provided three furniture packs as well as a bespoke service for private clients and landlords to ensure a range of design options were available to suit home buyers’ needs.

“We’re really excited about the launch of the next building at Quartermile, and are looking forward to tailoring our packs to suit the unique luxury conversion apartments at The Lofts.”

Cate Warren Interiors’ design packs include an economical option, a standard option, both design-led and durable, and an upgraded pack with a higher furniture level and a high-end design feel.

Cate Warren Interiors was formed in 2010 and the company has since established itself firmly in Scotland, completing show homes for Grosvenor Estates, Savills, J Smart and New Age Developers among others.

Cate Warren Interiors has also established a strong foothold in the burgeoning rental, and buy-to-let markets. Lead designer Cate Warren has been in the interior design industry for 15 years, since graduating from Goldsmiths, University of London. She started out at Philippe Starck’s Yoo Ltd, before moving on to work at Target Living as Design Project Manager for interior designer Tara Bernerd, with whom she worked on a succession of high-end, high-value projects for home builders, private clients, hotels, and bars.
