Hibs Chairman Rod Petrie has praised the police, stewards and everyone connected with Hampden Park for the professional manner in which they dealt with the pitch invasion which occurred at full time yesterday.

Thousands ran onto the field to celebrate and the goal posts were broken at the Hibs end.

A small number of Rangers fans also entered the field and a number of minor scuffles took pace before mounted police officers assisted in calming the situation down.

Petrie said afterwards: “114 years of pent up enthusiasm led to a degree of over exuberance and I think that not only do the players and coaching staff deserve credit but the police and the stewards and everyone connected with Hampden Park deserve credit for the professional way that they dealt with something that was totally unexpected.

“They have managed  to allow time for the more exuberance to die down and get everyone back in their seats to allow the presentation to take place.”

After learning that Rangers had made a statement claiming that players had been attacked Petrie continued: “That’s a serious allegation, I hadn’t heard that before and we will look at that seriously. It’s not something that we condone or want to have happened.
