Edinburgh Elsie

Elsie Inglis is one of Edinburgh’s women of note, but there are some who think there ought to be more than an old folks’ home (formerly a maternity hospital) to recognise her achievements.

Jim Eadie, MSP for Edinburgh Southern, yesterday wrote to the Scottish Parliament’s Presiding Officer, Rt. Hon. Tricia Marwick MSP, urging her to consider naming a meeting room in the Scottish Parliament after Dr Elsie Inglis.

Mr Eadie decided to do this after it had been agreed in principle that two of the meeting rooms in the Scottish Parliament’s Queensberry House are to be named after outstanding historical Scottish female figures.

In a statement, Jim Eadie said: “This is a great opportunity to recognise the achievements of inspirational women from Scotland’s rich history. Although there are many illustrious women in Scottish history, I have suggested that one of the meeting rooms honour Dr Elsie Inglis.

“Dr Inglis saved many lives and was an outstanding contributor to humanity, not only in Scotland but in a much wider context. She was also an early pioneer in the struggle for women’s rights and a leading member of the suffragette movement in Scotland.

“I look forward to hearing the Presiding Officer’s thoughts on this suggestion and I hope Elsie Inglis receives this special recognition in the Scottish Parliament as an appropriate tribute to her many achievements.”
