Mortonhall – Trams – Photographs – Register of Elections – Police puppy training

Looking back over this week’s news:-

The report commissioned by the Chief Executive of the City of Edinburgh Council was published and delivered to the 200 + families involved in the ‘babies ashes’ matter . One thing which followed this was a press conference held by the lawyers acting for the families.

When the council discussed the emergency motion calling for a multi agency working group to produce an action plan on what might happen in the future, Councillor Eric Milligan left the chamber as he declared an interest. All councillors are obliged to declare whether they have financial or other interests in the matters about to be debated in the chamber. He explained that Mrs Milligan works for the firm of solicitors acting for the family, and absented himself from the debate on the matter in accordance with the council’s rules.

The Edinburgh Reporter interviewed Councillor Hinds about the next move:-

You will be able to get on a tram from 5am on 31 May 2014. We don’t yet have full ticketing details but these should be available soon.

Councillor Lesley Hinds said:-“Over the coming weeks in the run-up to 31 May, Edinburgh Trams will be releasing full timetable and ticket details, as well as holding helpful ‘roadshow’ events at tram stops to help residents and visitors become accustomed to using the trams, for example how to validate their ticket.”

Here is our video of the tram with the official date emblazoned on the side….

We are always out taking photographs of the city. Are you? Would you like to share them with us? Our photo and video storyboards over here have a variety of subjects. If you would like to suggest one to us then we would welcome your input.

At the moment you can send photos of blossom trees here, your gardens and allotments here or the many clocks which there are in Edinburgh here.

You will be able to vote in the European election and the Independence referendum – but only if you have registered to vote. The council advises on how to do this:-

You must be on the register of electors to vote. Each autumn, every household in Edinburgh is sent a registration form. You can register at any time by calling the Electoral Registration Office on 0131 344 2500.

You can register to vote even if you are homeless or living in a hostel. You must

  • be aged 18 or over
  • be an EU national
  • have no ‘legal incapacity to vote’.

If you choose to vote in person, you will receive a poll card. This tells you where to vote.

Alternatively, you can apply

  • to vote by post
  • for someone to vote on your behalf (a proxy vote).

Apply to vote by post or by proxy when you register or any time afterwards. There are deadlines for particular elections. You can download the form from theElectoral Registration Office website(external link) or call  for a copy.

Young Voters – Referendum on Scottish Independence

The voting age has been lowered to 16 or over for the Referendum on Scottish Independence.  If you will be 16 by the date of the referendum you can register to vote by calling 0131 344 2500 or you can download the form from the Electoral Registration Office website(external link)

Voting by post

A postal pack will be sent to the address you request. This contains your ballot paper, postal voting statement and return envelopes. Once you’ve used your postal vote you can’t change your mind and vote at a polling station.

Voting by proxy

Anyone eligible to vote in the election and willing to be your proxy can vote on your behalf.

You must say why you need a proxy vote. For example, you are

  • going on holiday
  • unable to get to the polling place because of a physical condition
  • unable to get to the polling station because of work
  • attending an educational course
  • a Crown servant or in the Armed Forces.
